Parent Tutor Expands NEA's Read Across America Day Beyond School Walls

STUART, Florida - February 23, 2005
- In honor of the National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day on March 2, Parent Tutor Corporation is giving every parent in the United States a free 30-day subscription to its tutorial service. Now each week, parents can receive personalized reading suggestions tailored to their child's interests and reading levels in grades K - 8.

"We are paving the final mile between school and home for Read Across America Day by helping parents find the most appropriate books for their child-personalized to their child's reading level and interests to help spark a love of reading," said Bill Tudor, founder and president of Parent Tutor Corp.

Over 45 million children are expected to participate in Read Across America and The Parent Tutor helps parents become proactively involved in their child's reading. The Parent Tutor is an electronic tutorial that gives parents tools and resources to help their child succeed in school. Delivered weekly via email, The Parent Tutor can help children reach their full academic potential. When developing The Parent Tutor, founder Bill Tudor consulted with hundreds of educators, parents, and education experts to learn exactly what parents need to give their children an "edge" to succeed in school.

"Reading should be part of a child's home life, not just an activity for school. Parents who want to help their child read more may not know which books are appropriate. They will find that The Parent Tutor's weekly reading suggestions match their child's interests and reading level to ensure their success and enjoyment of reading," said Tudor.

Each week, The Parent Tutor includes a personalized reading suggestion, as well as tutorial activities on the essential "building block skills" a child must master at their grade level. The "building block skills" give students yet another edge toward academic success-in the classroom, on state and national tests, and in preparation for college entrance exams. Additional resources include Teach & Tech, where education experts answer parents' questions about the use of technology or other learning issues, and a weekly article covering an important education issue. Subscribers will soon have access to The Parent Tutor's entire database of tutorials, giving them the ability to find relevant activities on specific reading, math, language arts and science skills with which their child struggles.

School districts, such as the Plano Independent School District in Texas, have joined Parent Tutor Corp. in its efforts to encourage reading. "The Plano ISD and the Plano PTA work hand-in hand to give our students the best opportunity to succeed in their education. We feel The Parent Tutor is a valuable service that provides parents a tool to help their child at home," said Dr. Doug Otto, superintendent of Plano ISD. "We know that active parental involvement in a child's education has a substantial impact on how a child will perform in school. The Parent Tutor is one way to help parents take a proactive role to help ensure their child's academic success."

Parents may register for The Parent Tutor at www.parenttutor.com and enter "RAA" in the organization code box to initiate a free 30-day subscription. Parents are encouraged to sign up by February 25, to receive their first free issue prior to Read Across America Day.

Research shows that parental involvement greatly improves a child's academic success. The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory produced a series of research articles titled Research You Can Use to Improve Results. The report Parent Involvement in Education states that parent involvement in a child's learning is positively related to achievement and that the more intensively parents are involved, the more beneficial the achievement effects. The report can be found at www.nwrel.org/scpd/sirs/3/cu6.html.

PLANO STAR COURIER
PISD e-mail service provides tips for school success

By:, Rachael Anderson 02/14/2005

For parents who have children in the Plano Independent School District, there is a new opportunity to help their children excel in school.

Parents will become the tutor with a new service called, appropriately enough, "Parent Tutor."
Parent Tutor is a weekly publication delivered via e-mail. Each edition is customized to the child's grade level, abilities and interests.

"Everybody's busy," said founder Bill Tudor. "You don't have time to go looking; the e-mail is right there."

The Parent Tutor program is an effort to work directly with the school district and PTA. "We contact the leading school districts and ask them to do an independent review of the product to see if it would be of value to the parents," Tudor said.
The Plano ISD Council of PTAs has a partnership to sponsor and promote the program to parents in the district.
"We feel the Parent Tutor is a valuable service that provides parents the tools to help their child at home," said Superintendent Doug Otto.

In the e-mails, parents are provided with 50 "gatekeeper" skills throughout the year in math, language arts, reading and science, Tudor said.
"If parents work on the fifty gatekeeper skills every year, [their child] will have the basic skills to do well on the SAT and ACT," said Tudor.
Parent Tutor skills are either on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, which students must pass to graduate, or are a foundation skill, said Tudor.
For parents concerned about teaching their child themselves, each e-mail gives instructions on how to explain the skill in detail, said Tudor.
The tutorial is designed to take less than 30 minutes a week and is published for children in Kindergarten to eighth grade.

"Our mission is to get parents involved in the academics of their children," said Tudor.

In one recent tutorial, kindergartener "Elliot" was helped with his counting skills. The e-mail suggested ways for Elliot's parents to help him learn to count out loud to 100.

For parents, a new article written by an educational expert is included in the weekly e-mail, with topics ranging from the science of tsunamis to standardized testing, Tudor said.

To get kids interested in books, e-mails also include a reading list for children.
When the parent registers, they enter their child's interests, which then triggers a customized book list aimed at the child's reading level. If children have a new selection about a topic they like, they'll be more motivated to read the book, said Tudor.

Interested parents can fill out a short registration form at parenttutor.com. Plano ISD parents can enter PLANO in the organization code box for a four week evaluation period. A portion of the subscription fee will go to the PISD Education Foundation, to be used in the form of innovative teacher grants.

The Parent Tutor Garners Praise and Promotion by the Texas PTA
Weekly Electronic Tutorial Gives Parents Homework Help, Reading Lists and More

AUSTIN, Texas - January 27, 2005 -
Parent Tutor Corporation announced today that the Texas PTA has agreed to promote The Parent Tutor to their membership as a valuable tool to boost parental involvement in a child's education. The Parent Tutor (www.parenttutor.com) is a weekly electronic tutorial service that helps parents of K-8 students become their child's tutor and mentor with easy-to-use personalized lessons, reading selections and activities.
This action by the Texas PTA validates that The Parent Tutor provides parents with tools that can make a real difference in their child's education, which was the original vision of founder, Bill Tudor. Tudor created The Parent Tutor after consulting with hundreds of educators, parents and education experts on what parents need to help their children succeed in school.

Tudor, who has successfully developed other products for the education market created The Parent Tutor to give children an "edge" in school. "Parents are often at a loss for how to help their children succeed in school and how to assure they get into the college of their choice by performing well on high-stakes tests," said Mr. Tudor, president and founder of ParentTutor.com. "The Parent Tutor helps parents take an active role in their child's homework by giving them the information to answer their child's questions and give them additional exercises to reinforce key foundational skills in reading, math, science and language arts."

"Parental involvement is a key contributor to a student's academic success and we find that The Parent Tutor gives parents the help they need to have a positive effect," said Pam Meyercord, president of the Texas PTA. "We are pleased to promote The Parent Tutor as a tool for our parents because we believe it will have a substantial impact on how they connect and will help children perform better in school." The Texas PTA, founded in 1909, is a non-partisan organization representing over 700,000 parents and teachers and it is the oldest and largest child advocacy organization in Texas.

The Parent Tutor is delivered weekly via email to parents and it is personalized to each child's grade level, interest and reading abilities. Each week's issue includes skills tutorials with enrichment projects for the essential building block skills needed to succeed on state and national tests as well as to prepare for college entrance exams. The personalized reading lists that are created each week inspire children to read because their list is specific to their interests and reading level. Additional resources for parents include Teach & Tech -- access to an education expert who can help with each child's specific homework questions or give personal answers to questions about the use of technology or other learning issues. Subscribers also have access to Parent Tutor's entire database of tutorials for background materials and lessons.

The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory series of research articles titled Research You Can Use to Improve Results focused on Parent Involvement in Education. The report states that parent involvement in a child's learning is positively related to achievement and that the more intensively parents are involved, the more beneficial are the achievement effects. The report also states that there are strong indications that the most effective forms of parent involvement are those which engage parents in working directly with their children on learning activities in the home. Programs which involve parents in reading with their children, supporting their work on homework assignments, or in tutoring show particularly impressive results. The report can be found at:
